GLP-1 Medications & Weight Loss

GLP-1 medications are semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound), have changed what’s possible for people who have struggled with stubborn weight, blood sugar issues, and metabolic resistance. But in this practice, we don’t see GLP-1s as a quick fix. We see them as a powerful tool that works best when paired with the deeper root-cause work. You guessed it, the GUT! When you start with the gut, hormones, nutrient status, stress, lifestyle you make changes that actually last.

What you should know about GLP-1s

What GLP-1s do

GLP-1 medications mimic a hormone your body naturally makes after eating. They slow how quickly your stomach empties, signal fullness to your brain, regulate blood sugar, and quiet the “food noise” that drives constant cravings. The result for many people is meaningful, sustained weight loss alongside better blood-sugar control.

Who they’re for

People with stubborn weight that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise, insulin resistance or prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and clients who’ve been doing the work but still feel like their body is fighting them. We carefully screen for who is and isn’t a good fit before prescribing.

What our approach looks like

Weight loss in this practice is never just a prescription. We pair GLP-1 medication with comprehensive metabolic testing, gut health work, hormone balancing, nutrient support to protect muscle mass, and lifestyle coaching, so that when you eventually taper off, the foundation underneath is strong enough to hold the changes.

Why weight loss in functional medicine isn’t just about the scale

A pound lost on a scale doesn’t tell us how it was lost. GLP-1 medications can drive impressive numbers quickly, but if the work stops there, clients often lose muscle, deplete key nutrients, struggle with rebound weight when they taper off, and never address the underlying metabolic, hormonal, and gut imbalances that made weight loss so hard in the first place.

Here, GLP-1s are one tool inside a much larger program. We test for insulin resistance, thyroid function, hormone imbalances, gut dysfunction, inflammation, and nutrient depletion. We protect your muscle mass with adequate protein, resistance work, and the right micronutrients. And we address why your appetite, energy, and metabolism were disregulated in the first place. That integrated approach is what makes the weight loss feel sustainable instead of borrowed.

Common Questions about GLP-1

Will I gain the weight back if I stop?

Some weight regain after stopping a GLP-1 is common, however the goal of our integrated approach is to dramatically reduce that risk. By the time you taper, your gut, hormones, blood sugar regulation, and metabolic health are in a different place than when you started. That foundation is what makes maintaining the loss more possible.

What about side effects?

Most common side effects (nausea, constipation, occasional reflux) tend to be dose-related and improve as your body adjusts. Medication can be prescribed to help reduce these symptoms. Less common but more serious side effects are something we screen for carefully before and during treatment. Because we’re also working on your gut, hormones, and nutrition, we can usually minimize symptoms substantially.

Do I have to have diabetes to use a GLP-1?

No. While GLP-1 medications were originally developed for type 2 diabetes, several are now FDA-approved for weight management in people without diabetes. We’ll evaluate your full clinical picture and discuss whether one of these medications is appropriate for you.
